I saw a flurry of cardinals today—
The females in their muted sages
With their drab grays and dusty greens,
And only when they spread their wings
Are the brilliant crimsons glimpsed.
In fact, the only thing that made me know
That they were "redbirds" at all
Were the beautiful, royal red males that flew with them.
