I gave my love a redbud tree
That sprouted native.
I asked him to think of me
When he saw the heart-shaped leaves
So green in spring's new sun.
I asked him to make three wishes
And blow me kisses
When the pretty red buds bloomed.
I asked him to bury me
When the seeds came falling down
All over the ground,
The sidewalk, and the lawn,
And to yawn and sleep
Alongside me through winter's deep snows,
Then rise again to love's warm smiles and winks and glows
In some wistful meadow downstream.
