Uphill Both Ways

She went back to re-trace the steps
That her mother said she'd walked—
Hot brick in her hands to keep them warm.
There were no damn potatoes.
A resigned sigh escaped her mouth,
Agape with hard, labored breaths.
As she discovered the heartless truth.
It really was uphill both ways.
