She sabotages herself in little ways.
Her hair is beautiful without being combed,
But she brushes it harshly
And pulls the sweet tendrils from round her face
And puts them in a weird ponytail
On top of her head.

She puts on nice clothes,
But then insists on wearing her black chunky clogs,
And dons a horrible flack jacket
To cover her sensuous curves.

And when she gets to the party,
She’ll chew her nails,
And her terrified eyes will dart
This way and that,
Ensuring that her hopes and fears
Of anyone talking to her will all come true.

But if she casts her sad glance at you,
You might say hi.
You might be surprised if you take her to your home
And spend some time alone with her.

She’s not loud,
And she’s a different person
When the crowd is gone.
You might see the difference
If she lets down her hair,
And takes her jacket off.
