My Nice Little Hardback Journals

My nice little hardback journals sit blank—
The ones those well meaning friends offered me—
Their forte in life: organization! Meanwhile,
Scraps of torn out papers blotted with ink
And various washed out circles,
(Because they served double duty as coasters
For the bottoms of my sweaty iced tea cups,)
Scribbles on napkins and “naughty” gum wrappers,
Surround my life every where I go.
I have a different forte!

Suddenly they all swirl up around me—
Wind and inspiration moving!
Come to life great dreams of my heart!
The papers are fitting themselves into structure!
The crumpled pages smooth together
Into a gallant steed!
I throw myself over him
And without one spur
He’s off at a decided lope!

Where will you take me,
Magnificent Stallion?
Powerful arcing soaring beast!
Take me to the place your true heart dwells!
Let me live with you in peace.
Let me fill your den with scribbles!
With more little papers, ideas, thoughts,
And let us discover The More together
And leave off musts, and shoulds, and oughts.
